About the use case

What it is and how it works

EEG-based stress assessment is based on a known psychophysiological shift: under chronic stress, the power of fast beta rhythms increases and alpha activity decreases—the brain 'does not release' into inhibition. By comparing the rhythm profile at rest, under load, and after recovery practices, one can objectively measure how deeply a person recovers, not just how they evaluate themselves.

The scenario uses two levels of measurement. Express assessment—a 5-minute resting recording with stress and relaxation index calculation, suitable for corporate wellness programs and regular self-monitoring. Extended protocol—parallel recording of EEG, ECG (heart rate variability, HRV), and EOG on FLEX: the combination of brain rhythms with HRV provides a more stable state profile and looks good in research reports.

We supply ready-made configurations for such programs: headsets, rest and load protocol templates, report forms, and specialist training. Everything works without a medical circuit — it's a research and wellness tool, not a diagnostic device.

Metrics

What do we measure in this use case

Key signal indicators on which the methodology is built: from basic EEG rhythms to derived indices.

Alpha index

power 8-12 Hz at rest — basic relaxation marker

Beta/alpha ratio

'continuous inhibition' index: increases with chronic tension

Frontal alpha asymmetry

ratio of left and right frontal electrode activity (AF3/AF4)

Heart rate variability

HRV via parallel ECG — autonomic balance 'fight or flight'

Responsiveness to load

change in rhythm profile during a cognitive test

Recovery speed

time for profile return to baseline after a stressor

Implementation

How it works

1

Program format

Defining the scope: express evaluations in the office, a research protocol, or a combined wellness program.

2

Basic session

We capture background profiles of participants: rest, light cognitive load, first relaxation attempt.

3

Regular measurements

We schedule follow-up sessions — dynamics matter more than single measurements.

4

Recovery practices

We support the program with relaxation practices and neurofeedback sessions, measuring the effect with metrics.

5

Report and recommendations

We create summary reports for the group and individual profiles — with recommendations for routine and workload.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about the 'Stress and Recovery' use case

Can stress be 'measured' with EEG?
EEG does not provide a direct measurement of stress as a quantity, but it shows stable psychophysiological correlates: beta/alpha ratio, frontal asymmetry, reactivity to load. Combined with HRV (via ECG on FLEX), the picture of the state becomes reliable enough for wellness and research tasks.
Is this medical diagnostics?
No. Emotiv equipment is not a medical device: the scenario is intended for research, corporate programs, and self-monitoring. For clinical complaints, participants should consult a physician.
How long does one assessment take?
Express protocol — 5 minutes of resting recording plus a couple of minutes for headset setup. Extended protocol with load and HRV — 20–30 minutes per participant.
How often should measurements be repeated?
For wellness programs, weekly frequency is optimal: it shows trends without fatigue from frequency. In research, frequency is determined by the design—from daily sessions to once a month.
What does parallel ECG recording provide?
Heart rate variability is an independent autonomic marker: it shows the balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. The correlation between EEG and HRV dynamics increases confidence in recovery conclusions.
How to ensure employee data privacy?
All data is stored in your environment, and during the pilot we help establish regulations: which indices the HR sees, which remain at the specialist level, and how summary reports are anonymized.
